Rebuilds and Overhauls

At Baker’s Transmission Service, we use the highest-quality parts available for your unit. This means we are using components that meet or exceed the factory original specifications.

Top Automotive Part Brands

Our company uses clutch elements from BorgWarner, Raybestos, and EXEDY to name a few. We source our solenoids from BorgWarner, Bosch, and ACDelco.

Baker's Transmission Service, uses products from Sonnax Industries to address common problems and increase performance and durability in the unit. We understand that using the best parts results in a high-performing vehicle.

Note: In today's world of manufacturing, sometimes the corresponding parts are no longer available. This situation happens with some older model transmissions where dealers and vendors no longer support the aftermarket. In these cases, we use the most superior parts available.

Diagnostics

Today’s computer-controlled automatic transmissions are complex. They are an intricate electro-hydraulic system. The transmission control module (TCM) processes information from engine load sensors and determines how and when to shift the gears. The transmission is shifted via internally installed solenoids. This all happens in a split second. If the computer receives misinformation, it is going to command the wrong function (trash in = trash out).

Our technicians understand these complex systems and continually train on the latest technologies. This enables us to properly diagnose and repair your transmission and drive train issues by taking the guess work out of the process. At Baker’s we know transmissions!

Our Diagnosis Is Done In-House

Symptoms such as bumping into gear, hard shifts, skipped shifts, or slipping can be confused with a "bad" transmission. However, the problem may be just a control or command issue.

It is very important to diagnose the transmission system properly. This is important to determine whether the needed repair is an easy fix or if the transmission needs to be overhauled (rebuilt).

For this reason, it is extremely difficult to give an accurate repair estimate over the phone. So that we can provide you with accurate information, we always start by running diagnostics. That way, you can make an informed and educated decision on your repairs.

We use the latest scanning equipment to graph and monitor solenoids and sensors. By doing this, we make sure the function of the inputs and outputs are working properly.

We Look at Every Detail

Our initial diagnostics consists of various processes. This includes road testing your vehicle, checking the fluid level and condition, scanning the computer system, putting the vehicle on a lift, and performing a visual inspection of the entire drivetrain.

At this point, we usually have a good idea of what the problem is. Sometimes, further diagnostics are needed to identify the problem such as a pan drop, hydraulic pressure tests, or pinpoint electrical diagnostics.

If further diagnostics are needed, we call you first for approval before proceeding further. You are never surprised by added charges and are always the decision maker on repairs.

Minor Repairs

These are services that do not require removal of the transmission to perform the adjustment. The following issues fall into this category:

  • Leaks
  • Solenoid or Sensor Replacement
  • Shift Cables or Linkage Replacement
  • Cooler Lines Replacement

Maintenance

Maintenance (or servicing) is a tune-up for the transmission. It is not a fix for a problem, but a way to prolong the life of your gearbox and keep it running smoothly.

The transmission fluid is what keeps all the metal parts inside the transmission lubricated and moving smoothly. This fluid also provides hydraulic pressure for the clutches and bands.

Over time, the viscosity of the transmission fluid breaks down and loses its lubrication values. It is important to restore the properties of the fluid regularly to avoid wear and tear on internal parts. Maintenance also gives us a chance to inspect the drivetrain to ensure that you don't have any further issues that may need addressing.

We Do a Thorough Job

Our transmission service consists of a road test, scanning the computer system, dropping the pan and draining the fluid, inspecting the fluid and filter for any sign of metallic debris, changing the filter(s), replacing the gasket, refilling the unit with fresh fluid, and adjusting the bands if present. We do one more test drive before delivering your unit back to you.

Some vehicles are designed where the filter is not accessible. In this case, we road test and scan, drop the pan, and drain, inspect, and refill the fluid, followed by another test drive.

Our Service Maintenance Schedule

Here in the Grand Valley of Western Colorado, we follow the severe car maintenance schedule for our climate. We experience very high temperatures in the summer and below freezing temperatures in the winter. These extreme temperatures pay a toll on our transmission seals and fluid.

Additionally, we expose our vehicles to rough mountainous roads, steep grades, and dusty desert conditions. That is why we service automobiles on a more frequent schedule than factory recommendations.
